Halo: Campaign Evolved

· · Games · 2026

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched worldwide July 28, 2026: an Unreal Engine 5 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved from Halo Studios, on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Microsoft sold it as the start of a new era for the franchise that built Xbox. What you get is a $50-to-$70 Game Pass product that softlocks in its own prologue with game-breaking bugs, and the only part worth your time is a campaign you already own somewhere else and have played a million times.

You are Master Chief. The ring is still the ring. The Covenant still wants you dead. The Flood wants you worse. The gunfight loop is still long hallways, vehicle stretches, and that old Bungie sandbox rhythm rebuilt in a new engine. Sprint is in. Aim-down-sights default on. Later-series weapons show up earlier. You can jack Covenant rides. Online co-op or split-screen for three friends. Competitive multiplayer is gone. Firefight is gone. Forge is gone. Theater is gone too.

On top of the ten remade missions sits Operation: Meteorite, three prequel levels set a year before Combat Evolved, with Chief and Sergeant Johnson sneaking onto a Covenant research ship. That is the marketing hook for anyone who already owns Master Chief Collection or played the original. I started there on Steam, because if you are buying this for new story, you go to the new story first.

Listen to access media and you hear “pretty remake.” For players, this is a product. Content. Steam sits Mixed. PlayStation hangs around four stars with a fat slice of one-star reviews. Why? Game-breaking bugs, crashes, stutters, glitches, shader hangs, cutscene desync, audio pop, and a Microsoft account wall before you even hit the main menu. Digital Foundry noted it actually runs best on PS5 Pro while Steam Deck players mash the resolution into mush and still fall under 30 fps.

Within the first fifteen minutes of Meteorite, Sergeant Johnson wandered off and vanished from the game. A checkpoint reload did not fix it. Full restart from the title. Other players hit the same wall on their own runs. First impression for the remake meant to reignite Halo: game-breaking bugs in the new story missions that are not worth your time or money.

Meteorite is about ninety minutes of purple Covenant ship hangars and kill-rooms with no planned progression. The real campaign forces you to get better mission by mission. These encounters feel hollow. UNSC guns sit waiting for pickup miles deep inside an enemy ship like toys on a shelf. In original Combat Evolved, weapon placement was story and encounter logic at once. Here it is meaningless loot.

Hit an enemy with a rocket and he skates across the floor frozen, unaffected. The only thing missing is a T-pose. The bugs that shipped should embarrass everyone involved.

I am talking so much about the new material because it is the only reason to buy this at all. Combat Evolved, Anniversary, and MCC already exist and are masterpieces. This is “what if we ran Halo through Unreal Engine 5,” and you know what UE5 means for bugs. The new content is the only investment question, and the answer is do not waste your time or money.

The plot turns the Covenant into operators of a human hunting preserve: goofy Saturday-morning cartoon evil. Original Covenant violence ran on religious dogma and imperial orders. Humanity threatened their manufactured faith. That led to war. Early on, a Prophet lines the bad guys up like a boy band and millennial-monologues the client races like a toy commercial. In the old games you learned who the enemies were by fighting them and watching how aliens treated each other. Meteorite tells instead of shows. Classic writing failure.

Chief and Johnson fill every silence with buddy-cop banter. Johnson looks just like Steve Harvey. Funny Johnson was fine in the originals when the quips cut through fear. Here there is no fear. Constant quipping eats what tension remains. The more Chief talks, the less mythic he is. He is supposed to be a near-silent badass. MCU-cringe banter with Johnson undercuts that.

Then there is Lt. Williams, the character everyone online is talking about. She exists specifically and only to resent Master Chief. Halo Studios’ idea of a prologue to Halo 1 centers a new face who hates the twenty-five-year legacy character you paid up to $70 to play as. Good job.

The remade Combat Evolved campaign tries to carry the package on nostalgia and gunfeel alone. Too much dead weight on that hill. Bugs and broken play are unforgivable. Meteorite is entirely skippable, about a 2 out of 10, and the 2 is pure Chief-and-Johnson nostalgia.

Retail is $50, or $70 if you paid Premium for early access. Remade gunfeel can still satisfy for stretches, and there is a nostalgia hit reliving the original story. Bug-ridden play, skippable Meteorite, and a thin feature list next to MCC land this at 5 out of 10, and that five is Halo 1 doing the heavy lifting.

Do not buy it at retail. Do not go out of your way. If Game Pass is already on your card, that is the only honest on-ramp. Everybody else waits for a deep sale or spends the money on MCC. This thing did make me want to replay Halo; I ran the first few missions of ODST again and texted a friend that they do not make games like that anymore. That is a shame.
